Kremlin diteror bom! Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) dan timnya disebut sebagai pelaku aksi teroris yang biadab ini. Tak ada pilihan buat pemerintah Amerika Serikat selain mengingkari hubungan pemerintah dengan Ethan dan kawan-kawan. Kini agen rahasia ini harus bekerja sendiri. Tak ada bantuan. Tak ada petunjuk. Kini tim Ethan benar-benar bekerja sendiri.

Ethan dan timnya dilepas. Mereka dianggap buron. Tugas Ethan kali ini memang berat. Ia harus membersihkan nama baik Impossible Mission Force sekaligus nama baik seluruh anggota timnya. Ethan harus bisa membuktikan kalau pelaku teror bom ini bukanlah Impossible Mission Force.

Tak ada pilihan buat Ethan selain bekerja bersama Brandt (Jeremy Renner), agen Impossible Mission Force yang ternyata tahu banyak tentang masa lalu Ethan. Siapa sebenarnya Brandt? Bagaimana ia bisa tahu banyak tentang Ethan? Untuk sementara Ethan sepertinya harus mempercayai Brandt meskipun ia tetap harus waspada. Misi kali ini jauh lebih penting. Kalau Ethan sampai tertangkap, ia akan dianggap sebagai teroris dan diadili.

Super-spy Ethan Hunt has retired from active duty to trains new IMF agents. But he is called back into action to confront the toughest villain he’s ever faced – Owen Davian, an international weapons and information provider with no remorse and no conscience. Hunt assembles his team: his old friend Luther Strickell, transportation expert Declan, and background operative Zhen. They are to rescue one of his very own trainees, Lindsey who was kidnapped while on a surveillance detail of Davian. It soon becomes evident that Davian is well-protected, well-connected, and downright malicious. This forces Hunt to extend his journey back into the field in order to rescue his wife, Julia, and uncover IMF double agents in the process.
